Join us for our comprehensive Anxiety Series at AYL, designed to support individuals experiencing perinatal anxiety. Each class focuses on different aspects of anxiety and provides practical tools to manage it. Here’s what to expect:

Class One: Understanding Perinatal Anxiety

  • Icebreakers and Introductions: Get to know your fellow participants in a supportive environment.
  • Meditation and Mindfulness: Begin with a brief session to center and calm your mind.
  • Identifying and Normalizing Perinatal Anxiety: Understand that anxiety during this period is common and manageable.
  • Distinguishing Between "Feeling Anxiety" and Dysfunctional Impacts: Learn to differentiate between normal anxiety and when it becomes problematic.
  • Methods and Strategies Overview: Explore various methods to manage anxiety. We’ll touch on topics to be discussed in future classes and encourage participants to share what’s most important to them.
  • Knowledge and Anxiety: Discover how both too much and too little knowledge can impact anxiety.
  • Homework: Engage in activities to reinforce what you've learned.
Class Two: Physical and Relational Impacts of Anxiety

  • Recap and Sharing: Briefly review previous content and share homework experiences if desired.
  • Meditation and Mindfulness: Another session to help reduce stress.
  • Physiological Impacts: Discuss how anxiety affects the body, including impacts on fertility and pregnancy, and the benefits of physical treatments like exercise, massage, and acupuncture.
  • Relationships: Explore how anxiety affects relationships and vice versa.
  • Judgment and Control: Reflect on self-judgment and perceived judgment from others, and examine where you feel control.
  • Homework: Activities to deepen your understanding and coping strategies.
Class Three: Nutritional and Sleep Impacts on Anxiety

  • Recap and Sharing: Review previous lessons and share homework insights.
  • Nutritional Impacts: Learn about the relationship between diet and anxiety.
  • Sleep and Anxiety: Discuss how sleep patterns affect and are affected by anxiety.
  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Continue building mindfulness practices.
  • Homework: Further exercises to apply what you’ve learned.
Class Four: Spiritual and Environmental Influences on Anxiety

  • Recap and Sharing: Final review and sharing of homework.
  • Spirituality and Anxiety: Examine how spiritual beliefs and practices impact anxiety.
  • Nature and Anxiety: Discuss the effects of modern living on anxiety and the benefits of connecting with nature.
Meet Your Instructor: Lauren Hagen

Lauren Hagen brings 20 years of experience as a registered nurse, with a master’s degree in adult health nursing from UT-Austin. Most of her career has been spent in the maternity and perinatal fields, including roles in fertility, OB/GYN triage, bedside labor nursing, birth center management, doula services, and childbirth education. For the past three years, Lauren has been practicing "Nurse Coaching," a holistic wellness approach that honors the client as the expert in their health journey.

Lauren’s most relevant and valuable education in this area comes from her experiences as a single mother of three children. She has experienced pregnancy and birth in various forms: unmedicated and medicated, vaginal, c-section, VBAC, hospital, and home birth. These diverse experiences have taught her that there is no "better" way to give birth and that surrendering to the process of pregnancy, birth, and motherhood is an inherent part of the journey.
